So I had the brilliant Idea to start playing a sport I once loved, and left to pursue other things in life. Soccer is a sport I played for a very long time. A very long time ago. I haven’t touched a ball in about 6 years until today. It felt great to be back on the field. But there were ups and downs and on top of it, I realized how long I’ve been out of it, and how bad I have become. Mind you this is Southern California, and the sport is “Popular” to say the least. These guys know their shit, and I am not in Soccer shape.
I was picked up by a friend from work, such a cool dude, really laid back and come to find out, he loves to laugh. We started playing a passing/defensive game called, “Monkey in the middle”. It’s self explanatory. One guy in the middle trying to get the ball, while the other players try to pass it throughout the circle, which he is in. He found this hilarious. He laughed the whole time and made light of such a competitive moment. It also carried onto the field.
I played the second half. Center of the Mid-Field. I felt lost. Traditionally I grew up playing defense and know that position best. I’m not amazing at ball control, But I can cover people, and not give a man any options to pass, or score. Regardless I did my best and hustled as much as I could. Hopefully that showed. It was frustrating because I used to know the game inside and out, and also, was confident in my abilities. I didn’t have that tonight but, I will get it back over time. Through my frustrations and battle to keep contributing to the team, I kept hearing that same laugh coming from the defense. I couldn’t help but join in because it was so infectious. Even over the Bickering and attitudes being thrown around, it made light of the situation, and made me realize why I was there.
I rediscovered a sport I once loved. It was refreshing to get out and give it a shot. I’m not done by any means. Next week I hope to come more prepared and aware of my surroundings. Kind of like this whole move, it’s new and exciting and I’m starting to realize where my place is.
I enjoyed the day in general, a great new friend took me on a mission to find the most Obnoxious cleats on the market and out to lunch to try some new foods I’ve never had. Tandoori Tofu is delicious F.Y.I. Then I took the field with some new faces, which gave me a sense of team play and competitiveness, I feel I had been lacking for a long time. The best part is I was reminded why I was there, and ultimately why I’m here, and how I want to live my life. Having fun, while pushing myself to greater heights. The Giggling man, who shed light on some intense moments showed me that things are better enjoyed while you’re having fun. That’s what I had today. Pure fun.
